Is a Black and Decker 36V/40V MAX battery 40V or 36V?
Both — it is one battery described two ways. 40V is what it measures fresh off the charger with nothing drawing from it; 36V is what it settles at under load, and that is the figure most other brands print on the tool. So a 40V battery and an 36V tool are the same class of battery, which is exactly why an adapter between them works.
Will this fit my other Black and Decker batteries?
Only Black and Decker 36V/40V MAX batteries. Black and Decker also sells Black and Decker 18V Ni-Cd, Black and Decker 20V, and those use a different socket — same brand, different rail and terminals, so they need their own adapter. Compare the sliding rail on your battery against the photos before ordering.

Can I run Black and Decker 36V/40V MAX tools from a different brand’s battery?

Stop when the tool noticeably slows rather than running the battery flat, and stop using the adapter if it becomes unusually hot or the contacts look damaged.
Does it work with third-party Black and Decker batteries?
Usually. What matters is the socket, not the badge: if the battery slides onto a Black and Decker 36V/40V MAX tool and locks the way an original does, the adapter will take it. Aftermarket batteries do vary in moulding, so if yours looks unusual send us a photo and we will check before you order.
