Makita's 36V/40V XGT is the high-power system — a bigger pack, its own socket, and tools that ask more of a battery than 18V can give. It sits alongside 18V LXT rather than replacing it, which is where most of the confusion starts.

Worth knowing before you order — XGT is a separate system from Makita's own 18V LXT, and an XGT pack does not fit an LXT tool however alike the two look on a shelf. Is a Makita 36V/40V XGT battery 40V or 36V?
Both — it is one battery described two ways. 40V is what it measures fresh off the charger with nothing drawing from it; 36V is what it settles at under load, and that is the figure most other brands print on the tool. So a 40V battery and an 36V tool are the same class of battery, which is exactly why an adapter between them works.
Will this fit my other Makita batteries?
Only Makita 36V/40V XGT batteries. Makita also sells Makita 18V Ni-Cd/Ni-MH, Makita 10.8V CXT, Makita 18V LXT, and those use a different socket — same brand, different rail and terminals, so they need their own adapter. Compare the sliding rail on your battery against the photos before ordering.
How do I find the right adapter on this page?

Can I run Makita 36V/40V XGT tools from a different brand’s battery?
Not with an adapter from us. Makita 36V/40V XGT works as the battery side only here — we make adapters that let a Makita 36V/40V XGT battery power other brands’ tools, not the reverse.
Can I charge a Makita 36V/40V XGT battery through the adapter?
No. The adapter carries current from the battery to the tool and does nothing else — there is no charging circuit inside it. Keep charging Makita 36V/40V XGT batteries on their usual Makita charger.
Will an adapter damage my Makita 36V/40V XGT battery or my tool?
Used with undamaged, compatible equipment it is not expected to. Makita 36V/40V XGT batteries are lithium-ion with their own protection circuit built into the battery, and it keeps doing its job through the adapter. Stop when the tool noticeably slows rather than running the battery flat, and stop using the adapter if it becomes unusually hot or the contacts look damaged.
Does it work with third-party Makita batteries?
Usually. What matters is the socket, not the badge: if the battery slides onto a Makita 36V/40V XGT tool and locks the way an original does, the adapter will take it. Aftermarket batteries do vary in moulding, so if yours looks unusual send us a photo and we will check before you order.
