RIDGID Battery Compatibility

RIDGID has produced cordless power tools across multiple battery voltages, some of which are now discontinued. Because of this, RIDGID batteries are not universally compatible, even within the same brand.

This guide covers:

  • All RIDGID cordless battery voltages
  • Which platforms are discontinued
  • What is and isn’t interchangeable
  • When battery adapters can be used

RIDGID Cordless Battery Voltages (All Generations)

RIDGID has released cordless tools using three distinct battery voltages:

  • 12V – discontinued
  • 14.4V – discontinued
  • 18V – current platform

These platforms are electrically and physically incompatible with each other.

RIDGID 12V Battery Compatibility (Discontinued)

RIDGID previously offered a 12V cordless lineup, typically aimed at compact tools.

Key facts:

  • Designed exclusively for RIDGID 12V tools
  • Platform is fully discontinued
  • Batteries are not compatible with 14.4V or 18V tools
  • No official upgrade or backward compatibility exists

If you own RIDGID 12V tools today:

  • Battery availability is limited
  • Cross-voltage use is not possible
  • Adapters between RIDGID 12V and other RIDGID platforms generally do not exist

RIDGID 14.4V Battery Compatibility (Discontinued)

RIDGID’s 14.4V platform predates the modern 18V lineup.

Key facts:

  • Used on older RIDGID cordless tools
  • Offered historically in Ni-Cd and Li-ion versions (varies by model)
  • Platform is fully discontinued
  • Not compatible with RIDGID 12V or 18V tools

14.4V tools cannot be upgraded to 18V batteries without unsafe modifications and should not be adapted directly.

RIDGID 18V Battery Compatibility (Current Platform)

RIDGID’s current cordless tools run on the 18V battery platform.

Within the RIDGID 18V ecosystem:

  • RIDGID 18V batteries are designed to work only with RIDGID 18V tools
  • Higher capacity (Ah) batteries provide longer runtime, not higher voltage
  • Batteries from older RIDGID platforms (12V, 14.4V) are not compatible

This is the only actively supported RIDGID cordless platform today.

Using Battery Adapters With RIDGID Tools

By default, RIDGID batteries are not compatible with other brands, and batteries from other brands will not fit RIDGID tools directly.

However, battery adapters can allow a battery from another brand to power a RIDGID cordless tool when the adapter is designed for that specific pairing. In some cases, the adapter can also regulate or convert power appropriately, meaning the nominal voltage does not necessarily need to match.

Depending on the design, an adapter may:

  • Step voltage up or down as required
  • Regulate current delivery
  • Integrate protection circuitry (over-current, under-voltage, thermal limits)

Note: Not all adapters are equal. Compatibility depends on the exact battery → tool pairing and the adapter’s internal design.

Important Disclaimer (Non-Official Product)

Battery adapters are third-party accessories. They are not manufactured by, not licensed by, and not endorsed by RIDGID.

Using a third-party adapter may void the tool or battery warranty and can fall outside manufacturer specifications. Always ensure the adapter is explicitly designed for your exact tool and battery type.

Common Questions

My battery says 18V and the tool says 20V. Will they work together?
Yes — they are the same class of battery described two ways. A five-cell battery measures about 21V fresh off the charger and settles near 18V under load; one maker prints the higher number, another the working one. The adapter changes neither, so an 18V battery runs a 20V tool and the reverse holds too.
Will the adapter damage my battery or tool?
Used as intended, no. Where the battery and the tool are the same class — 18V to 20V, say — the adapter is a direct connection and changes nothing electrically. Where they are not, it contains a DC-DC converter that supplies the voltage the tool expects. Either way it modifies neither part: take the adapter off and both are as they were.
Do the brands differ in where they put the battery safety components?
They do. AEG and RIDGID build the monitor and its sensor into the battery itself; other makers put those components in the tool instead. That difference is what the next answer depends on.
Can I charge my battery through the adapter?
No. The adapters carry no charging circuit, and they must never be used with anything that charges a battery — a jobsite radio with a charging cradle, for instance. Take the battery out of the adapter and charge it on the charger made for it.
What precautions apply to a battery without its own safety components?
If your battery has no protection circuit of its own, do not run it flat. Stop at roughly 20% charge. Lithium cells are damaged by deep discharge, and a battery without its own cut-out is relying on you to stop in time.
How reliable are your adapters?
Each one is tested before it ships and carries a 12-month warranty from the day it is delivered. If something is wrong, write to support@powertoolsadapters.com and we will put it right.
Will the adapter look exactly like the photographs?
Usually, though the colour or finish can differ. We sometimes ship a functionally identical version made with a different casing material or colour. What arrives always fits the battery and tool pairing you ordered.
